Sentence Terms

 

  • phrase - a group of words that does not contain a subject and a verb
  • clause - a group of words that contains both a subject and a verb
  • independent clause - a clause in a sentence that can stand alone or as a complete sentence
  • subordinate clause - another term for dependent clause- a clause that looks like a sentence in a sentence that can't stand alone
  • coordinating conjunctions- FANBOYS  ,for  ,and  ,nor  ,but  ,or  ,yet  ,so   used to make compound sentences
  • subordinating conjunctions - a conjunctions such as if , because ,  since  that introduces a  dependent clause
  • compound sentence - a sentence that consists of two or more independent clauses connected by fanboys
  • complex sentence - a sentence that has one independent clause and one or more dependent clause
  • run-on sentence - two or more sentences that are run together with commas or without any punctuation
  • fragment - missing a subject or a verb; does not express a complete thought
